PRESENTATION

FANTASIE MINORMarcoda Silva FerreiraCollectiontout-terrain du centre chorégraphique national de Caen en Normandie

"With its title borrowed from the lexical field of the piano, Fantasie minor was born of my meeting with Chloé Robidoux and Anka Postic, young dancers from Caen. The two have been dancing together since childhood, and their training in urban dance (hip-hop, dancehall, house dance) has played a part in their relationship and their development as individuals.

The piece responds to a proposal from the Centre Chorégraphique National de Caen en Normandie to create a work that can be performed in a wide variety of places: with a stage measuring 4 metres by 4 metres that can be easily adapted, Fantasie Minor can be performed indoors or outdoors, in theatres or gardens, in squares, etc. The space of the stage imposes a constant proximity on the dancers, which they have to negotiate and deal with.

This sharing of space between two people is also what is at stake in the music of the piece, Franz Schubert's Fantasy in F minor, Op. 103, a composition for piano with four hands, a direct echo of the dancers' four feet in such a restricted space.

Because their culture is one of 'battles' and 'cyphers', the two dancers are constantly reinventing their practice. There is something both fraternal and competitive between them, as if they were constantly responding to the logic of the game. These biographical elements, these juvenile reminiscences, run through a choreographic composition inspired by the dances that these bodies have studied. For me, Fantasie minor is a kind of rite of passage, an idea underlined by the Fantasie in F minor, the last piece composed by Schubert before his death at the age of 31, like a premonition of another rite of passage.

The dance approaches this composition by drawing on the illustrative approach of urban dances to music. The performance begins virtuosically, almost conqueringly, but as the choreography progresses other sensibilities are revealed. It's as if, beyond "conquering the stage and the audience", the dancers were allowing themselves to feel or reveal a more fragile dimension. The music features moods that allow them to oscillate between these two sensibilities. On their feet, hard-toed boots amplify these variations in interpretation. Worn like ballet shoes throughout the piece, they give them a heavier silhouette, anchored to the ground. The duet is built on this gap between the foot that strikes the ground with force and assurance and the almost crystalline piqué of classical ballet. The absurd and the virtuoso as a springboard for aesthetic, technical and personal rediscovery".
